US Digital Media Usage: A Snapshot of 2017

Written by

eMarketer, a top market research company part of the Axel Springer family, and IBM compiled a report on US digital media usage for 2017. The report includes stats and illustrations covering social media, video viewing, smartphone and wearables usage figures.

While growth for total internet consumption has plateaued, both Snapchat and Instagram users have increased substantially. Snapchat users are up 14% from 2016 while Instagram surged 12.5% since 2016, and is now at 77M users. Pinterest is the third social media platform to achieve significant growth, now at 69M users reflecting a 9.2% uplift over 2016.

With the rise of social network users there has also been a switch from desktops and laptops to mobile devices as the main outlet for internet consumption. The number of mobile phone internet users is projected to grow by 223M in 2017, more than double the number of desktop and laptop users. As the number of mobile phone internet users expands, the mobile access methods of digital videos, digital audio and gaming increase in popularity. New devices like wearables show higher usage rates but haven’t yet reach the point for advertisers to shift budget accordingly.
