TikTok Affiliate Marketing: A UK Creator's Guide

Written by Edward Cranmer on 15 minute read

How TikTok Shop and affiliate networks compare, what you need to qualify in the UK, and how commission gets paid.

Two routes lead to commission on TikTok. The first runs through TikTok Shop, where you tag products in videos and LIVEs and earn a percentage of what sells inside the app. The second uses affiliate links from a network, which lets you promote anything sold anywhere online.

If you sell workout plans, promote a subscription box, or want to recommend a brand that has no TikTok Shop listing; these will work through Shop, so affiliate links are your only way in. That covers a lot of people, and most guides skip it entirely.

This guide walks through both. What each one pays, what the UK rules require, how to set them up, and what to expect once you start posting.

TikTok sits alongside every other platform in our wider guide to affiliate marketing.

The two ways to earn commission on TikTok

Both routes follow the same principle as how affiliate marketing works anywhere else. You get a percentage of a sale you helped create. The differences start with what you are allowed to promote.

TikTok Shop keeps the whole transaction inside the app. You browse a marketplace of products, add them to your showcase, tag them in videos or LIVEs, and TikTok handles the checkout and the payment.

An affiliate network sits between you and thousands of retailers across the wider web. You apply to a brand, generate a tracking link, and send people to that brand's own site.

Running both is common. A beauty creator might tag Shop products in one video and link to a salon booking service in the next.

The choice matters most when your niche sits outside what TikTok Shop stocks. Workout plans, travel, insurance and services of any kind fall outside it, and no amount of follower growth changes that. Software sits in the same position, with a more targeted audience through affiliate marketing on LinkedIn than anything TikTok offers.

Our guide to affiliate marketing across social media platforms covers how the same choice plays out elsewhere.

What you need to join TikTok Shop Affiliate in the UK

Most guides quote 1,000 or 5,000 followers. Those are US numbers. TikTok's own UK policy sets a lower bar.

To get and keep creator ecommerce permissions in the UK, you need to:

  • Hold 500 followers on the account you plan to use
  • Be 18 or over, confirmed through TikTok's age verification
  • Access the account from the country where you registered it
  • Avoid classification as a government, politician or political party account
  • Have no history of revoked permissions, including on any previous account

That last point catches people out. A revocation follows you across accounts, so buying followers to hit the threshold risks losing access permanently.

There is a small buffer once you are in. Permissions only drop away after your follower count falls more than 100 below the threshold, so a dip to 450 leaves you active.

You will also need a UK bank account, KYC verification, and a name that matches your beneficiary account. That name cannot be changed once submitted, so get it right first time.

Full criteria sit in TikTok's UK creator eligibility policy, updated July 2026.

Setting up each route

Joining TikTok Shop Affiliate

  1. Apply through TikTok Studio

Open Studio, find the TikTok Shop for creators section, and check your eligibility markers. Approval can come through quickly once you clear the criteria, though some accounts get held for review.

  1. Verify your age

TikTok confirms you are 18 or over before granting ecommerce permissions. Nothing works until this clears.

  1. Add your payout details

Link a UK bank account and complete KYC. Your name has to match the beneficiary account exactly.

  1. Build your showcase

Browse the product marketplace, add items to your showcase, then tag them in videos or LIVEs.

Using affiliate links from a network

  1. Switch to a business or creator account

The website field in your bio appears on certain account types only, so a personal account gives you nowhere clickable to send people. Switching is free and takes a minute in your settings.

  1. Apply to a network and name your TikTok profile

Brands want to see where your audience is before approving you. Give your handle, your follower count and the niche you post in, since a specific account reads better than one covering everything.

  1. Decide what your one link points at

TikTok gives you a single clickable slot, so every offer you run competes for it. Send it straight to a product when you are pushing one thing, or to a landing page holding several when your videos cover a range.

  1. Tell people how to reach it

Captions and comments carry no clickable links here, so viewers have to tap through to your profile. A pinned comment saying where the link sits does more work than the link itself.

  1. Test the journey a viewer takes

Open your own profile in the app, tap the bio link, and buy or reach the checkout the way someone watching would. TikTok opens links in its own browser, so the journey looks different from a click on desktop.

Cookie windows matter more here than the click itself, since people watch on a phone and buy later on a laptop. Our guide to affiliate tracking and cookie windows covers what still counts as yours.

How to get products to promote

Buying everything you review gets expensive. TikTok Shop runs two sample routes to solve that.

Free samples come from the seller at no cost. You request one from the product page, the seller approves it, and you post content within 14 days of it arriving. Eligibility depends on having made at least one TikTok Shop sale in the previous 120 days, so this route opens up after you have something on the board.

Refundable samples work the other way round. You buy the product yourself, create content, and get your money back automatically once your posts drive the required number of sales.

Look for the Get Sample button on any product detail page. Approved and pending requests both sit in Manage Samples, inside the Creator Center, alongside which ones still need content posting.

Picking products matters more than the sample itself. Check how many units a listing has already sold and how much stock remains before you commit, since a product that has never sold is unlikely to start with your video.

Outside TikTok Shop, sampling runs on relationships. Brands running affiliate programmes sometimes send products to publishers driving consistent sales, arranged directly with their affiliate manager rather than through a platform feature.

Where your links can go

Placement works differently depending on which route you are using.

TikTok Shop products attach directly to content. Tag them in a video and a product card appears over the footage. Pin one during a LIVE and viewers buy without leaving the stream. Your showcase also sits on your profile as a shoppable grid.

Affiliate links from a network live in your bio. That single link carries all your traffic, which is why many creators route it through a landing page holding several offers.

Pinned comments give you a second placement, catching anyone who watched without checking your profile.

Cross posting the same video elsewhere opens up placements TikTok withholds. Instagram affiliate marketing covers Stories stickers and product tags, both of which put a link closer to the content than a bio ever will.

What earns on TikTok

Demonstration beats description. A product opened, tested or worn on camera outperforms anything static, which is why unboxings and first impressions dominate shoppable content. Skincare creators film the texture, tech creators film the unboxing, home creators film the before and after.

Honesty converts better than enthusiasm. Naming what a product does badly makes the rest of your review believable, and viewers who trust one recommendation come back for the next. A comments section arguing about a product usually means the video worked.

Repeat formats build faster than one- offs. Pick a structure your audience recognises, a weekly haul or a running series testing one category, then let familiarity do the work. Viewers who know what is coming are the ones who watch to the end.

Your face is optional. Hands only demos, voiceovers over product footage and screen recordings all work, and plenty of accounts earning through Shop never appear on camera.

Timing beats volume. Restocks, seasonal peaks and products already trending in your niche give a video something to attach to.

Getting paid

TikTok Shop

  • Commission formula: revenue minus refunds, multiplied by the rate the seller set on that product
  • Rates: set per listing by each seller, so two products in the same category can pay very different amounts
  • Payment timing: the 3rd or 15th day after delivery, depending on the seller's settlement period
  • Holds: disputes, returns and refund requests freeze payment until they close
  • Dormant balances: paid out automatically every 90 days, with a notification 7 days beforehand

Your dashboard shows estimated commission from the moment someone buys. The settled figure arrives later and can be lower.

Affiliate networks

Commission gets approved once the brand confirms the sale and its returns window closes, then paid on the network's schedule. Cookie windows work in your favour here, since a sale can count days after someone clicks your link, which suits anything people research before buying.

Rates vary widely across programmes. The Advertiser Directory lets you browse affiliate programmes and commission rates before deciding what to promote.

What to expect in your first few months

Earnings vary more on TikTok than on any other platform, and the videos promising a fixed monthly figure are usually selling a course.

Real ranges look like this. Some creators earn a few pounds in their first month while they work out what converts. Others build up to a few hundred once they focus on one or two products that already sell. A small number working with agencies clear thousands a month, and they treat it as a full-time job.

Three things shape which group you land in:

  • Product choice. Promoting something with a proven sales record beats promoting something you like the look of
  • Consistency. Creators who stop posting for two weeks watch their earnings stop with them
  • Fit. Products that suit your existing audience outperform anything picked purely for its commission rate

Our tips for growing affiliate income cover this in more detail.

Views convert at a low rate. A video passing 100,000 views can produce a handful of orders, which makes reach a poor proxy for income.

One thing works in your favour. A video that lands keeps earning, since products stay tagged and sales continue arriving months after you posted. Search driven platforms stretch that further, and YouTube affiliate marketing covers how a single review answers the same question for years.

Disclosure on TikTok

Anything you earn from has to read as commercial before a viewer gets into it. TikTok moves fast enough that a label buried three lines down never gets seen.

  • Put it in the first frame, where it lands before anyone swipes on
  • Stick to "ad" or "#ad", which the ASA accepts where terms like affiliate and gifted fall short
  • Say it out loud, since most viewers never open the caption
  • Repeat it on LIVEs, at intervals rather than once at the start, because people join partway through

TikTok Shop content carries a system label, which handles the platform requirement. Your own disclosure still needs to be there.

The ASA publishes detailed guidance on labelling affiliate content.

TikTok affiliate marketing FAQs

How many followers do you need for TikTok Shop Affiliate in the UK?

500. That figure comes from TikTok's UK creator eligibility policy. Higher numbers you see quoted, usually 1,000 or 5,000, apply to other markets.

Can you run your own shop and be an affiliate?

Yes. Creator accounts bound to a seller as an Official or Marketing account carry no follower minimum, though Official Shop Creators lose access to the wider product marketplace in exchange.

Can you do affiliate marketing on TikTok without showing your face?

Yes. Hands- only demos, voiceovers and screen recordings all qualify, and no eligibility criteria mention appearing on camera.

Can you use affiliate links without TikTok Shop?

Yes. Affiliate links from a network go in your bio and work for anything sold online, including services and digital products that TikTok Shop does not stock.

How much do TikTok affiliates get paid?

Sellers set commission per product, so rates differ across listings. Earnings depend far more on which products you promote and how consistently you post than on your follower count.

Ready to start

Pick one product you already own and use often. Film how it fits into your day, add your link, and check the click registers before you post anything else.

Volume matters less here than repetition. Posting the same format three times a week in one category tells you more about what converts than thirty videos across five niches.
