Google restricts click trackers for Google Ads

Further privacy changes see Google clamp down on uncertified click trackers in Google Ads.

Google's recent update to restricted ad formats and features restricts the use of uncertified click trackers. Click tracking, the ability to record user click behavior, is a fundamental part of affiliate marketing but can be used unscrupulously or maliciously which is why Google are clamping down on their activity.

As of August 28, 2023, only certified click trackers are permitted in the tracking template for ads. Failure to use a certified click tracker may result in ads being rejected and as such not reaching your target audience.

In the announcement, Google states, “ads may be disapproved” if an uncertified click tracker is used. Disapproved ads will never be published, let alone earn commission.

The good news is that Awin and ShareASale are registered with Google as certified click trackers and our tracking URLs will continue to work in Google Ads. You don’t need to take any action, can carry on as normal and your conversions and commissions are unaffected and completely safe with this change.

If you are unsure of the status of a click tracker you are using, Google’s announcement contains a link to view certified providers. If you are concerned that any of your ads are at risk then consider changing to Awin links where appropriate to ensure your customers and your commission can keep growing.
