One of the basic concepts in SEO focuses on two of the above fields; the page title, and the snippet or page description. Knowing how to optimise these fields will play a large part in how search engines judge the relevance of your page. Let’s look first at your page title.
A title tag tells search engines and users what your page is about. It is a tag placed within the <head> tag of the HTML of your page, and appears in the first line of search engine results. For this reason, it is the first way users can recognise if your page is relevant to their search, and therefore important to get right.
For specific article pages, the <title> tag is usually your article heading, but for homepages, you can list the name of your website or business and other important information such as location or main offering.
Best Practices for Using Title Tags
1. Be accurate
Use a title that accurately and effectively reflects the topic of the content.
- Be unique
Make sure that each of your pages has a different title tag, as this will help search engines distinguish one page from another.
- Be concise
Google will only show a limited number of characters in the title, so being concise will avoid part of your title being cut off. Avoid using unnecessary or lengthy words.
