Last week we shared 10 questions to ask yourself when starting a new publisher website, aimed at both new publishers and existing publishers who may be looking to start a new venture or want to run a health check on their current proposition. Now you’ve completed this, it’s time to get started with posting content.

 Regular, fresh content is essential for good Google rankings and for keeping your audience engaged. This is easier said than done and even experienced marketers may struggle with new ideas from time to time.

That’s why this week we’ve devised five easy ways of creating with new content ideas for your website: 

      1. Run a website that you are passionate about
        This tip may seem obvious but If you are lacking interest and enthusiasm for the sector or subjects of your site, you will struggle to find motivation to think up new ideas. If you are running a website about topics that you are interested in, new content ideas will come to you naturally and you are far more likely to put in the effort to do your research.
      2. Look out for reoccurring themes and topics of conversationamongst your employees, colleagues and industry peers
        It is important to keep your ears to the ground and take note of reoccurring debates that are taking place in your surroundings. Similarly you may see conversations between people on your social newsfeeds which may offer insight into interesting topics to consider. Try to keep something with you at all times to literally note down an idea or topic – you never know when inspiration may strike you. If a notebook is too bulky, the notes section in your phone will do. For more sophisticated note-taking and organization, there are some great free apps you may find useful including Evernote, Google Keep and Asana.
      3. Make a review of questions that you have received
        You may receive enquiries via the comments section of your website, email and social media. You can turn these into content by compiling the questions in a running list (using some of the tools mentioned above) and may even be able to group them into different categories depending on the number you receive. You will then be able to create content in the form of a ‘how-to’ guide or top five or ten tips to answer these questions.
      4. Use Google & social media to find new trends
        The best place to discover hot topics in your part of the world is to see what is trending on Twitter and Facebook. On Twitter you can change the list of trends by location or have them ‘tailored’, based on who you follow. On Facebook you can filter what is trending per sector, including politics, science and technology, entertainment and sports.  You can also use the Google trends tool to see what the most popular topics have been searched for recently. For each topic you can then see the trending queries, i.e. which search terms are being used for that topic and related topics. This will also help with your SEO efforts.
      5. Sign up to industry blogs and newsletters
        Make sure that you set aside a small window of time every day to read other blogs, industry sites and social media pages within your industry. Most blogs and websites will have a mailing list that you can sign up to in order to receive a roundup of news directly in your inbox. That way you can stay in touch with the latest trends and gain inspiration for new content from these.Make sure to stay true to your proposition by posting content that will be relevant for your readers. Whilst the Oscars might be trending on Google and Facebook, posting about them on your automotive blog will be random! However if you think a little outside of the box, you can certainly think of way to incorporate trending topics into your content – for example creating a post where you ask your readers to nominate certain cars/automotive brands for your own version of the Oscars.

 Make sure to stay true to your proposition by posting content that will be relevant for your readers. Whilst the Oscars might be trending on Google and Facebook, posting about them on your automotive blog will be random! However if you think a little outside of the box, you can certainly think of way to incorporate trending topics into your content – for example creating a post where you ask your readers to nominate certain cars/automotive brands for your own version of the Oscars.

Immersing yourself in your sector, keeping informed on the latest trends and encouraging discussions on your posts are simple but effective ways of ensuring that content ideas will continue to flow.
